PRIVATE Hidden Wonders
You should be fitted to walk/stand for approximately 4.5 hours.
The good spirit Yocajú Bagua Maraocoti reigned in the mountain of Yuké,
the most sacred place for our indigenious Ancestors.
This hike takes you from Mount Britton, Los Picachos and El Yunque Peak.
You should be physically fitted to hike and carry your own backpack for
approximately 4 - 5 hours (5 miles) on uneven and muddy terrain. Light
lunch box (El Picnic Verde) will be distributed before the start of the hike.
Since we start at Palo Colorado Forest, you will ascend through sierra
palms, the trail leads steeply upward and eventually reach the cool mist
of the rain forest through the Cloud Forest, it will be muddy in places. As
the elevation changes you can observe different trees through a gradient
in vegetation. You will be hiking in at least four forest zones. A short stop
will be made at a rain shelter mid-way along the first half of the trail and, if
necessary, on our way back to the parking.
When we offer transportation, a short stop at Palo Colorado (restroom
stop) and Torre Yocajú are included. We can provide light lunch and
snacks (Picnic Verde) at extra cost (add $15 pp). Bring your bottle of
water, we will refill it for free.

Strenuous, be prepared to walk/stand for at least 6.5 hours in a remote

El Toro Trail was built by the CCC in the 1930’s and in 2005 the area
was designated a National Wilderness Area. The El Toro Wilderness
is named after the highest peak (3,524 feet) in the El Yunque National
Forest, which is also the only tropical wilderness in the US National
Forest System.
It provides habitat for endangered species, such as:Elfin-woods Warbler,
Puerto Rican Boa, Desmarest's Red Fig-Eating bat, five species of Coquis,
and the Puerto Rican Parrot. This is the perfect habitat for the Lepanthes
eltoroensis orchid and most of all the listed plants species described for
El Yunque National Forest. For safety reasons, three members of our staff
will be in charge of the group.
El Picnic Verde is always included with a healthy menu to boost your Energy
while hiking it this remote area. Remember to bring your backpack as we
will distribute this light lunch before the hike starts.
El Toro Trail connects with Tradewinds/Río Sabana junction. If you decide

You should be fitted to walk/stand for approximately 4 hours.
Our journey starts at Palo Colorado where we will hike to a stone
masonry tower through El Yunque Trail. Mount Britton Tower was built
between 1937 and 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps at an
elevation of 941 meters above sea level within the La Mina Recreation
Area. It sits within the boundaries of the Cloud Forest (also known as
Dwarf Forest or Mature Tabebuia/Eugenia Woodland Montane Rain
Cloud Forest).
The tower is one of the best-preserved surviving examples of the
CCC constructions in Puerto Rico. It was named in honor of botanist
Nathaniel Britton and his wife, bryologist, Elizabeth Britton. In 2024
the Tower was listed in the National Register of Historic Places,
Reference Number 100010421. Other names as per the NRHP:
Atalaya; El Pequeño Morro.
If you are lucky to go with us on a very clear day, you will have a
panoramic view of El Yunque, the Atlantic Ocean, the eastern coastal
plains and the Caribbean Sea. What about cloudy days? On a cloudy
day, the clouds will be swirling around you.
