El Toro Wilderness
Hike to the highest mountain in El Yunque National Forest, and the first highest mountain
out of the Cordillera Central. For our Ancestors, Yuké was home to Yocajú Bagua
Maraocoti, a sacred land that protected the territory of what we know now as the Greater
Antilles. This hike combines natural and historic aspects of our daily live. You must be fit
to join our Guides!
Strenuous, be prepared to walk/stand for at least 8 hours in a remote
area and conditions where you will find deep mud, landslides, erosion,
narrow ridgetop tracks, steep steps, encroaching vegetation, washed out
sections, downed trees, short scrambles over roots and rocks, wind, rain,
mist, with variable climate that requires good effort and balance under such
conditions. This hike definitely cannot be compared to the ones to Mount
Britton or El Yunque Peak.
If you are experienced hiker that wants to tame the bull, this backcountry
hike is for you. On clear days, you have a 360 degree views of the North
and the South of the Island. Nevertheless, expect to finish muddy, and
remember, sometimes longer than planned due to weather variation.
This is one of the most difficult hikes in El Yunque.
This backcountry hike starts and ends at Road 186. You will meet your
Certified Guide, which lives in the area, and two assistants on site.
El Toro Trail was built by the CCC in the 1930’s and in 2005 the area
was designated a National Wilderness Area. The El Toro Wilderness
is named after the highest peak (3,524 feet) in the El Yunque National
Forest, which is also the only tropical wilderness in the US National
Forest System.
This protected area provides habitat for endangered species, such as:
Sierra Warbler (Elfin-woods Warbler), Puerto Rican Boa, Desmarest's
Red Fig-Eating bat, five species of Coquis, and the Puerto Rican Parrot.
It is the perfect habitat for the Lepanthes eltoroensis orchid and most of
all the listed plants species described for El Yunque National Forest.
El Picnic Verde is always included with a healthy menu to boost your Energy
while hiking it this remote area. Remember to bring your backpack as we
will distribute this light lunch before the hike starts. We will refill your bottle
of water for free before the hike.
To book this option, contact us as price varies depending on the number of
hikers.
