Take the road less traveled, explore, eat, drink, relax, enjoy!
You should wear long pants and long sleeve shirt,
hiking boots; sorry, no flip flops. Remember to
bring walking sticks, and rain poncho. Some of
these
private hikes are now available during the
night and can be combined with our Ancestral Areito.
Pick-up / Drop-off is available from selected hotels in Luquillo, Río Grande, Fajardo, Isla Verde, San Juan, and Dorado.
You should be fit to walk/stand for approximately 4.5 hours.

The good spirit Yocajú Bagua Maraocoti reigned in the mountain of Yuké,
the most sacred place for our indigenious Ancestors.

This hike takes you from Mount Britton, Los Picachos and El Yunque Peak.
You should be physically fitted to hike and carry your own backpack for
approximately 4 - 5 hours (5 miles) on uneven and muddy terrain. Light
lunch box (
El Picnic Verde) will be distributed before the start of the hike.

Since we start at Palo Colorado Forest, you will ascend through sierra
palms, the trail leads steeply upward and eventually reach the cool mist
of the rain forest through the Cloud Forest, it will be muddy in places. As
the elevation changes you can observe different trees through a gradient
in vegetation. You will be hiking in at least four forest zones. A short stop
will be made at a rain shelter mid-way along the first half of the trail and, if
necessary, on our way back to the parking.

When we offer transportation, a short stop at Palo Colorado (restroom
stop) and Torre Yocajú are included.  We provide light lunch and snacks
(Picnic Verde). Bring your backpack and a bottle of water, we will refill it
for free.

These hikes are offered in different trails in mid to high elevations within La Mina Recreation
Corridor
after the gate of La Coca Falls (Road 191 Km. 8.1), which opens at 8:00 AM. Also, on
the Western side of the Forest (El Torito)  All hikes are
offered only on a private basis (upon
request) and during daytime; flexible itineraries.  Nocturnal alternatives are also available.
You should be fit to walk/stand for approximately 4 hours.

Our journey starts at Palo Colorado where we will hike to a stone
masonry tower through El Yunque Trail. Mount Britton Tower was built
between 1937 and 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps at an
elevation of 941 meters above sea level within the La Mina Recreation
Area. It sits within the boundaries of the Cloud Forest (also known as
Dwarf Forest or Mature Tabebuia/Eugenia Woodland Montane Rain
Cloud Forest).

The tower is one of the best-preserved surviving examples of the
CCC constructions in Puerto Rico. It was named in honor of botanist
Nathaniel Britton and his wife, bryologist, Elizabeth Britton.  In 2024
the Tower was listed in the National Register of Historic Places,
Reference Number 100010421. Other names as per the NRHP:
Atalaya; El Pequeño Morro.

If you are lucky to go with us on a very clear day, you will have a
panoramic view of El Yunque, the Atlantic Ocean, the eastern coastal
plains and the Caribbean Sea. What about cloudy days? On a cloudy
day, the clouds will be swirling around you.
